The first part of the book has been written according to the syllabus for Heat Engine in civil, electrical and mechanical courses of diploma institutes and several useful chapters relating to general mechanical engineering have been incorporated in the second part with a view to fully include the topics of mechanical engineering as are taught to civil engineering students. Though British system has not been ignored, metric system has been followed in the book wherever necessary. We have deliberately refrained from making a complete change as it would be inconvenient for student to understand such change at this stage. Necessary tables and formulae published by the Indian Standard Institution have been incorporated in the proper place to get the students acquainted with Indian Standards.

FLUID MECHANICS: THEORY, NUMERICAL PROBLEMS AND SOLUTIONS image
This book covers  the syllabuses  of  subjects like Fluid Mechanics, Hydraulics of different Indian Technical  Universities, Engineering Institutions, and  Polytechnique  colleges for single semester courses. The object of the book is to enable the students to study in proper direction so to help them to solve real life problems. This subject is generally taught in a single semester of the engineering colleges and polytechnics in different engineering disciplines such as civil, mechanical, chemical, aerospace, agricultural, mining, architecture engineering etc. As duration of one semester is only for six months, the content in this book has been planned in such  that the topics cover the entire syllabus in an optimized way. A second objective of the book is to integrate the concepts and techniques discussed within the text into a body of knowledge sufficient in both depth and breadth  so that the practitioner of this subject will find the topics useful. Though the volume of the book is not huge, adequate solved numerical problems and diagrams are added. Total number of drawings in 16 chapters is 323 and solved number of problems is 325. All objective problems and numerical problems for readers are furnished with final answers.           This book also covers the syllabus of A.M.I.E. (Section B), GATE and Indian Engineering Services Examinations. The students sitting for the same will find this book as an invaluable help.           Some salient features of this book are:

  • Some useful noting, multiple choice questions with answers are given at the end of each chapter.
  • Worked out examples have been selected from easier to harder sequence.
  • The language is simple and easy to follow.
  • Many tables have been provided so that the students can grasp the matter easily.
  • Proof of many theorems has been presented in a simple manner.
  • Simple figures and line diagrams have been provided to illustrate the topics.
We sincerely believe and hope that this new work will meet the requirements of the readers, students, and teachers particularly second year degree students in civil, chemical and mechanical engineering students  for which the book is primarily intended. The book will be found stimulating and helpful also to the apprentices and general readers having interest in engineering studies.

The chapters are: Production and productivity, product engineering  – design   and   development, Cost and investment analysis, Facilities location and layout  design, Mechanical handling of materials, Methods  study  for manufacturing systems, Work measurement, Job design and human factors engineering, Job evaluation, merit rating and wage incentives, Fundamentals of production planning and control, Forecasting techniques, Scheduling techniques, Materials management and inventory control,   Project planning by network analysis, Just in time and MRP, Quality control
